Doyle’s 1950 Mercury

Doyle’s 1950 Mercury

Doyel Gammell had always dreamed of owning a custom Mercury, and he finally had the chance to make that dream a reality. He found a bare shell of a 1950 Mercury Coupe and started to work on it in his garage in Palos Verdes, California.

The first thing he did was to chop the top lightly to give it a sleek and custom look. Then he Frenched in both the front and back lights, which was something the factory never thought of doing. The color he chose was a beautiful Deep Pearl Rose that gave the car an elegant and sophisticated look.

Doyel wanted to make sure his custom Mercury had a great suspension, so he added a Camaro front suspension. He then installed a 350 Crate motor and added an Edelebrock intake manifold. To give the engine a unique look, he got the valve covers from Moon, and as a true customizer, he took the grill from a Desoto.

The interior of the car was just as important to Doyel as the exterior. He had Teas make the front and back seats, and Eddie Martinez in Bel Flower did all the upholstery work. He also had Classic Instruments custom-make all his gauges. To finish off the interior, he had Mercedes carpets installed throughout.

When it came to tires, Doyel wanted something special. He got Cooker to provide him with whitewall tires that gave the car a classic look.

It took Doyel three years to build his custom Mercury, but it was worth it. He now cruises the boulevards of Palos Verdes in his one-of-a-kind car, and everyone in the neighborhood knows it’s him. Doyel’s 1950 Mercury Coupe is a testament to his passion for custom cars and his dedication to making his dream a reality.
