Roland Sand’s Grand Moko

Roland Sand’s Grand Moko

Roland Sands Design was founded by Roland Sands, a former championship- winning GP rider and motorcycle racer who had a unique approach to motorcycle parts and riding gear. His designs were always different and bold, and he wasn’t afraid to take risks.

One of the most challenging projects that Roland and his team took on was the Hard Rock bike project. They had to design a bike that was perfect for the Hard Rock Tour, which featured some of their best friends, the late Johnny Chop and Jesse Rooke. Knowing that both of them would bring the heat, the bike had to be different and eye-catching.

Initially, they had banked on a frame that turned out to be unsuitable for the project. So they had to go with a Standard Bobber frame from chopper guys, which was a tough choice. But they knew it was the right one since it would make the bike stand out from the crowd.

Roland and his team wanted the bike to wheelie, so they decided to go overboard and build a special 15 x 7” bead lock drag racing wheel. It gave the project its steam and traction, making it one of the most impressive bikes they had ever built.

They named the bike Moco Grande, which was derived from another bike they had built called Borracho. Moco was Borracho’s “crackhead cousin,” over the top and bold. The color of the bike was pinched off a 70’s drag car, the Bob Banning Dodge Charger, and the paint job was done by Chris Wood, which turned out to be one of the cleanest paint jobs Roland had ever seen.

The bike had bulletproof glass rocker box covers and a bulletproof glass shift knob, making it one of the most unique bikes they had ever built. It had an PM Contour Finned ignition cover, front-mounted moon oil bag, shock spring

seat, Ohlins road racing forks, SilverSmithFin push rod badges with RSD logo, and leather by Mauricio at Azteka custom cars.

Thanks to all the homeys who helped on this project, including Tom “Gimley” Foster, Brett Marshal, James Crosby, the Great Lyndelski, and Wink Eller. The Hard Rock bike project was a tough one, but Roland and his team pulled it off and created a bike that would go down in history as one of their best designs.
